Film & Documentary Production

This one or two year highly practical programme offers advanced technical skills and training covering all aspects of media including Photography, Media, Film and Documentary Production, Design and Print, and Broadcast Journalism.

Whether you aspire to be a scriptwriter, director, editor, producer, journalist, graphic designer or documentary maker, this course will provide you with an excellent balance of technical expertise and critical awareness in a fun and exciting environment.

Students have the opportunity to showcase and publish their work in our major media exhibition, our Film Festival and our annual print productions.

Higher National Diploma in Media Production (Moving Image) (2 Years) (Optional)

Duration

1 or 2 Years Fulltime.
This course is also available Part-time, but will take longer to complete.

Assessment

Students are continually assessed through practical project based assignments including short films/documentaries, ongoing critical review of work, production of visual promotional materials, running a professional production company, production of a professional print publication and the event management of a major film festival.

Career Opportunities

The wide variety of production skills in video, print and design, and the technical skills gained on the course make our graduates very successful in their direct employment in the media industry.

After two years in St. Kevin’s College students are fully prepared to enter the media industry directly in areas such as Scriptwriting, Film Directing, Producing, Editing, Cinematography, Documentary Making, Journalism, Graphic Design and Education.

Progression

Our students can also progress to degree courses in Ireland, UK and Europe to continue their education. Entry into final year of three year degree programmes in a number of universities is possible, both in Ireland and the UK. Universities have expressed keen interest in the calibre of student graduating with this award.

The course, through the QQI links, scheme allows students to earn up to a maximum of 400 points, to which they can add a possible 600 points with the portfolio prepared in the college.

Facilities

Video

Modern well-equipped video production studio including a full range of Avid nonlinear editing suites, professional digital video cameras, and everything else required to complete your projects.

Digital Imaging & Design

Industry standard computer hardware and software applications used in the areas of Image Manipulation, Print and Graphic Design.

Resource Room/Library

A media library, housing extensive relevant books, newspapers, journals and magazines is available in the college. We also provide the services of the Tiernan Mc Bride library in the Irish Film Institute to all our media students.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate, LCA ,FETAC Level 5 award or BTEC (ND) in Media Production. Applicants may be accepted without formal academic qualifications. At interview you may present a portfolio of written or visual work, which is desirable but not mandatory. Mature applicants are welcome.
